made my day

this package made my day. it had been a really crappy day actually, because that was the day my car got vandalized. (it's still in the shop, getting 2 new doors on the driver's side and i should get it back on wednesday. i have a rental right now. anyway.) so this was definitely a bright spot.

i big thank you to Abby at Sew Get Dressed for her fabric giveaway and all of the bonuses she threw in!

look at all the goodies! first off is the fabric! it's blue plaid seersucker. (i'm a girl who loves blue!  read abby's last post about gender expectations. i think when i was a little girl my favorite color was red. never pink. although by definition pink is just a tint of red… but i always loved blue as well. and now blue is one of my go-to colors.) now if you had to pick one fabric that represented your city, seersucker would represent the city where i live. it's so hot here in the summer and seersucker is very popular. it's even common for men to get married wearing a striped seersucker suit with matching suits for his groomsmen. and bow ties. and flip flops. and sunglasses. no joke. (we didn't go that route though. my husband wanted a traditional black tux.)

anyway, so this blue seersucker is going to make a really cute sundress! haven't decided on the pattern yet. any ideas? maybe one by colette?

and the bias tape is from her grandma's stash - how awesome is that? and maybe i can make a button up sundress. the pearly white buttons are too cute. also from her grandma's stash is a point turner and i think it doubles as a "jean-a-ma-jig" with 2 different heights (see where the 2 notches are). it can raise the back of your presser foot to help sew over thick seams. it kind of works like a shim. correct me if i'm wrong.

and lastly, check out what she crocheted! how amazing is that! it's so tiny and intricate!

  1. Nice fabric! Sounds like you'll get a lot of use out of that seersucker. When you said 'sundress' and 'Colette' with that plaid I immediately thought of the Hazel dress - it could be really interesting to play with stripe direction on the bodice! And I'm another girl who was adamantly against pink as a child (still not a huge fan) and blue is my favourite, favourite colour. I try branching out (red, purple) but always find myself being drawn back to blue fabric.
I look forward to seeing what all those awesome gifts become :)

    1. Hopefully i can manage to get the plaid to match at the seams! I haven't done anything in plaid before. Have you done the Hazel dress? It looks cute.

  4. Cool! Isn't seersucker great? As a youngin', I never liked pink either. I remember alllll my friends liked pink, but my favorite color was yellow. Once an individualist, always an individualist? (goes to look up exact definition of "individualist"....)

    1. "individualism - the habit or principle of being independent and self-reliant." That was exactly me as a child - independent and self-reliant. i had (have) a great family, but by choice i was always very independent and self-reliant, and very stubborn, as a child.

this is funny, but i remember wanting a blue plaid comforter for my bed for my birthday. and i got a pink plaid one. i was so upset. and the person who gave it to me pointed out that there was a stripe of blue in the plaid. but really that thing was mainly all pink. no bueno.

  5. What lovely goodies! I'm also more of a blue girl than a pink girl - always have been. That seersucker is going to make a great sundress!

    1. Hehe, and i'm wearing a blue sweater right now. i can see in your profile picture, you're wearing a blue shirt too! I generally don't gravitate toward pink when i'm buying clothes or fabric. coral maybe, but usually not true pink. and i think light pink just looks like my skin tone.

speaking of which, i bought a super cute bikini awhile back that was white with little red flowers. (a white swimsuit is usually not a good idea, but this was fully lined.) i didn't realize until later (in a photo) that from a distance those little red flowers blended in with the white and looked pink!! which made me look naked!!! ahhhhhh!! and then i just couldn't wear it anymore.

  6. I'm so sorry to hear about your car, and so glad that my package arrived with such perfect timing. I had no idea of the potential multiple uses of that point turner. No wonder my grandma kept a few of them around! :) I'm excited to see what you make with the seersucker!
