so i sewed this… and i'm wearing it, oh my

i almost brought along a change of clothes. i'm imagining ripped seams or some other tragic fail. but i'm being brave and i'm wearing my dress today!

i hemmed it last night and stole a hook and eye from another dress (i'll fix that later, i just didn't want to go to the store). the dress is a little stiff. i didn't wash the fabric before sewing this up (impatience over here). i thought i was going to go unnoticed but one of the girls at work called me out. (also when i say "girls," know that i am the youngest person in my department and one of the few that does not have children or grandchildren. so "girls" is all-encompassing.)  i did tell them that i was making a dress and would try to wear it to work, but i guess she could tell i made it? although she did ask me the other day if i made my skirt and it was a store-bought skirt. so maybe she's just going to ask me every day now. and then all of the other girls made me stand up and had to come over and check it out (blushing over here). oh and i wore some little strappy gold sandals that i already had, because i didn't do any shopping over the weekend. And the photos…

business in the front
still business in the back
ok ok, so you need proof that i'm actually wearing it, geez you're so demanding…

you like that bathroom mirror shot
my husband wasn't home right then and i didn't feel like getting out my tiny tripod and playing with the self-timer before heading to work. (note to self: clean bathroom mirror before taking photos. windex is quicker than photoshop.) and here's a nice headless shot, where i stood on a step stool. i know, super professional. i'm going to tell myself it's artsy.

my legs aren't that dark, it's the lighting - look you can see my toothbrush
what, you need to see the back too? fine, but only because you asked nicely.

don't mind the messy bun
so it's not perfect by any means, but it's wearable, i think. well i am wearing it. but some would say, "just because you can wear something, doesn't mean you should." ok, i'm being too critical.

you love seeing my camera in the photo
i'm excited to move on to something else now. on to the next one. - yes, i quote jay-z.

    1. Thanks! i was a little worried about the fit. i made a few adjustments because the pattern wasn't fitting at all when i started. but, i'm new at this, so it's all a learning experience.

  2. I really like your dress ~ I think the fit is very flattering and I do love your fabric choice. I feel the same way when I wear something I've made. I haven't worn too many except for the skirts and one dress (not the most recent) but I'm still learning too. Good work!

    1. Thanks! And luckily, the dress made it through the entire day! (and it didn't even wrinkle as bad as i thought it would, so that's a plus!)

  5. You did a really good job! Super cute! Don't you love co-workers? Mine are always making me stand up and "model" my handmade goodies. So embarrassing!

    1. Do they guess that you made it or do you tell them? Luckily it was only 6 coworkers near me, not the entire office!! I'm waiting to see if they figure out when i wear my next homemade creation. And I'm not giving them any heads-up next time!

  6. What a great dress! You did a fabulous job and picked a great fabric. You know, if we all knew how flimsy the store-bought clothes we buy are, we'd all carry an emergency sewing kit and a change of clothes. I bet your dress holds up for years!

    1. That is true!! I probably sewed sturdier seams than some of my ready-to-wear clothes. There are some stores I won't even shop at anymore because the construction looks so poorly done.

  7. It looks so good on you!! Congrats! Isn't it funny how the other gals at work always react to homemade things? Like it's soooo foreign. Admittedly, I kind of like the attention ;)

Also, your captions crack me up!
Can't wait to see your next creation.

    1. Thanks! I thought I was just keeping myself entertained with the captions =)

Hopefully I'll squeeze in some good sewing time over the weekend, so I can have something else to put up to the "impress your coworkers" test.

  8. Such a cute dress! Well done! So funny I studied fashion design and never sew for myself anymore.
Maybe I will start one day again.

    1. Thanks! You should definitely sew for yourself! I'm just starting out, but it's a really fun hobby, and I'm learning so much. I think it's great to have some kind of hobby that gets you excited - something to look forward to that's just for you. Your photography is great! I actually studied photography (among other things) in college, but you can't tell from my photos! haha! (my good camera was stolen, and i haven't put much focus into photography in the last few years). Hope you get back into sewing for yourself!

    1. Thanks!! This actually wasn't the first fabric i picked out for this dress, but the fabric i wanted was down to the end of the bolt and there just wasn't enough. It takes me forever to decide on a fabric to use!

  10. You look gorgeous in this dress! I've been trying my hand at sleeves lately and am still looking for the right length / shape that looks best on me (yours look perfect on you btw). Which pattern did you use?

    1. Thanks! The pattern is NewLook 6095. The sleeves turned out a lot better than I had expected. I was worried they were going to stick out and be all pointy. One word of warning on that pattern, i guess there is a lot of ease built in, because i had to alter both of the side seams in by 5/8", the back by 2" at the top and an inch off the width of the sleeves. I should've cut a smaller size.

    1. I'm sure you'll be able to! I need to revisit this pattern because I've learned so much more about fitting now. I think it would be great in a ponte or double knit fabric!
